Shira Khotim- General Counselor
Hi guys! My name is Shira Khotim and I am an incoming junior at the University of Arizona. I was born and raised in Phoenix, but I absolutely love to travel! I am studying special education and rehabilitation with a minor in sociology. I am currently a resident assistant in one of the dorms at the UofA. Next year, I am going to be studying abroad in Spain at some point. In my free time, I volunteer with Project Sunshine, workout, go hiking, and see friends and family! I also love trying anything new and going on adventures. This will be my third year on staff and my fifth summer at camp. I could not be more excited to see all of the old and new faces this summer. Shahar Shitrit- Israel Culture Specialist
22 year-old from Israel. I served in the IDF for more than four years as an officer. In my pastime I like dancing salsa, painting, reading and hiking. So excited for the summer! I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic and instructive experience! I’m looking forward to starting it, especially for the feeling of being together, improving each other and having a weariless laughter.
Ruthie Sorom- General Counselor
My name is Ruthie Sorom and I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. While I’m not at camp I usually write stories, draw or paint, or enjoy playing sports and hiking. I love camp because it feels like a second home to me where I can meet new people and have fun expressing who I am. I’m excited for all the festivities Camp Stein has along with color wars and Shabbat.
Reed Hirshman- Activities Director
Hi, I am Junior at the University of Arizona in Tucson studying Economics and Political Science. I am originally from Scottsdale, AZ and grew up in the CBI community. This will be my 6th summer at Camp Stein and I’m glad to be back after a few summers off. I’m excited to be the new activities director and look forward to a fun summer at camp!
Rebecca Rockmaker- General Counselor
Hi!! My name is Rebecca Rockmaker and I am so excited for camp this summer! This is my 6th summer at Camp Stein and I am proud to say it is my 2nd year as staff. I am from Phoenix, Arizona and I go to school at Arizona State University. When I am not at camp, I coach gymnastics to kids ages 2 and up, sing in a choir, and hang out with friends. I am so excited to meet my campers and make it their best summer ever!
Rachel Goldschmidt- Athletics Specialist
Hi! My name is Rachel Goldschmidt and I am super excited to be spending my fifth summer at Camp Daisy and Harry Stein with you! I am also super excited to be this year’s athletics specialist. Currently, I live in Chandler, Arizona but will be attending University of Idaho in the Fall for a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science and eventually a Masters in Athletic Training. When I am not at Camp Stein, I enjoy volunteering, playing sports, learning about Judaism and hanging out with friends and family. I love coming back to Camp Stein every summer because it is a great way to enjoy nature, learn more about myself in Judaism and meet new people! I look forward to this summer with all of you.
Max Palay- General Counselor
My name is Max Palay and I’m from Phoenix, AZ. I’m currently studying Biochemistry and Physics at the University of Denver. This will be my 9th summer at camp and I love coming back every year because of the amazing friendships and memories I always create.
Lindsay Schawelson- General Counselor
Hi everyone!! My name is Lindsay Schawelson and I am an International Relations major, finishing up my Freshman year at American University (go eagles!) in Washington D.C.! I’m so excited to be coming back for my tenth summer at camp!! When I’m not at camp, I’m involved with American University Ambassadors, AU Hillel, AU students for Israel, and Greek Life! My favorite things to do at camp are stargazing, cabin bonding, hiking, and dancing! I cannot be more excited to be back at camp this summer to see all your beautiful faces and make some more memories!
Jacob Blackstone- General Counselor
Hi! My name is Jacob, and this will be by 2nd year as a counselor, and 8th year in total at Camp Stein. I am from Scottsdale and am currently studying Software Engineering at ASU Barrett Polytechnic. I am so excited to be coming back for another summer of fun and memories! Camp is where I have grown up for every summer since 2012, and I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else! In my spare time, I love to program, play guitar, and travel. See you all at camp!
Jacob Abraham- Frolf Specialist
I am so excited to be coming back to camp this summer. I am from Tempe, AZ and this will be my 13th summer at camp. I am currently dual majoring in Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering at Arizona State University. I love working on projects and hanging out with my friends. I’m a huge fan of the theatre and work on shows when I have the time. Camp for me has always been a special community. I’m excited to welcome back returners and welcome the newcomers this summer as the Frolf Specialist.
Glendy Montes Razo- Support Staff
My name is Glendy, I’m 20 years old, I’m from the smallest state of Mexico, Tlaxcala. I’m studying language teaching and I consider myself as a hard-working person, friendly, open minded, polite, and cheerful, I love learning new things every day and make friends as well, in my free time I like to read, listen music, or make desserts with my mom, I love the idea I can stay in your camp to meet new people and to have the experience to travel an another country knowing new things, for me to have this opportunity will be an amazing experience.
Eliava Birdt- General Counselor
I am from Phoenix, Arizona and have been attending Camp Stein since 2012, so I’m super stoked to be a staff member this year! I have been a member of School of Rock Scottsdale’s music performance program for the past four years and have been heavily involved in my high school’s theater program, but I’m heading off to Flagstaff in the fall as an Honors freshman at Northern Arizona University. I love spending time in the great outdoors at camp and am looking forward to another awesome summer!
Eli Lider- Rocks and Ropes Specialist
My name is Eli. I am 24 years old and i live in small village named Eshta’ol. It’s right between Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv.
I was born between the corn fields of Omaha, Nebraska. I know, in the middle of nowhere.
On my free time just love spending my time outdoors, if its hiking, jogging or just taking my dogs for a walk in the forest. On rainy days, or extreme warm days, I enjoy staying at home and play video games with my friends. No one can beat me at Pokemon, No One!
I also did a bit if blacksmithing just for fun. I made a couple of knives and shelf or two, but nothing fancy.
I’m really excited for this summer because I’ve always heard, even as a kid, about these summer camps and i always wanted to go to one. As a kid i didn’t have the opportunity, but that didn’t stop me from going as an adult. I can’t wait for all the fun to start!
Also i have a picture when i was 4 years old with my grandpa at Lake Pleasant, so my mother made a request to take a picture from the same spot. It makes the location of the camp more unique for me.
Daniel Niv- Rocks and Ropes Specialist Shalom everyone! My name is Daniel Niv, from Israel, and I’ll be your rope instructor this summer. (yay!) I’m really excited to come to America for the first time to meet you all. I’m already thinking about all the fun things we’ll do together 🙂 See you soon!
Benjamin Kahn- Overnight Trip Director
I am thrilled to be returning for my eighth summer at Camp Stein and third consecutive as the Overnight Trip Director. The camp overnights have always been a highlight of my summer experiences. I grew up in Ahwatukee, which is where I also currently reside, and have been teaching science at Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School for the past few years. When I was younger, I actively participated in my temple youth group and was the NFTY-SW Communications VP during my senior year of high school. I’m grateful to once again spend a summer with the rest of the Camp Stein community.
Annie Rosenthal- General Counselor
Hi everyone!! My name is Annie and I’m so excited to spend my 12th summer at Camp Stein and 2nd year on staff! I am a currently student at the University of Arizona studying Sociology. I’m looking forward to seeing all of my favorite campers and staff members and making this the best summer yet!
Andrew Gross- General Counselor
I am Andrew Gross, and I am from Tucson, Arizona. I am currently a student at Boston University, so I don’t spend much time in the desert sun anymore. I enjoy ultimate Frisbee and spending time on the waterfront. I always love going back to camp because it creates an environment where personality and energy flourish. It becomes easy to be yourself among friends and peers. I am beyond excited for my second year on staff as a general counselor.
Allyson Varcoe- General Counselor
Hi, my name is Allyson Varcoe. I am from Scottsdale, AZ, and I will be a freshman in college in the fall. I have grown up attending Congregation Beth Israel and began my first summer as a camper at Camp Charles Pearlstein, now Camp Stein, in 2011. I went to camp for 5 years after that summer and then went on the Big Trip Israel. I played Varsity lacrosse and soccer for my high school and I love archery and horseback riding. In addition, I have been extremely involved with the North American Federation of Temple Youth as the Social Action Vice President and a member of Team Swift which volunteers with the Swift Youth Foundation. I am excited to teach my campers essential life skills that my counselors have taught me over the years!
Adrienne Baratz- General Counselor
Hello! My name is Adrienne Baratz and I’m from Phoenix, Arizona. I am currently studying Communication with a concentration in Public Relations at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! Some of my interests include traveling, photography, and trying new restaurants with my friends! I am beyond excited to come back to camp this summer because it is one of my favorite places to be! This summer will be my eleventh summer up at camp and I can’t wait to make more memories with everyone this upcoming summer!
Carly Sacks- General Counselor
Hi I’m Carly! I’m super excited to be coming back to camp this summer! This will be my seventh summer at Camp Stein and my first year as a counselor! I am going into my sophomore year of college at the University of Arizona and I’m studying Psychology and Spanish! At school I enjoy volunteering for project sunshine and hanging out with my friends. I can’t wait to make new friends and memories at camp this summer!
Caroline Carriere- Songleader
Hey y’all! My name is Caroline and I am super pumped for my 9th summer at camp and my 2nd year on staff! I am a rising junior at Arizona State University studying Family and Human Development with a minor in Business and a certificate in LGBT+ studies. I am also a Sunday school teacher at CBI and a community assistant at ASU. When I’m not at camp you’ll find me playing guitar, reading, and spending time with my friends. Jake Miller- General Counselor
Hi everyone! My name is Jake Miller and I’m from Paradise Valley, Arizona. I went to Brophy College Preparatory where I ran on the varsity cross country and track teams. Next year I will be a freshman at Princeton University. I volunteered at Swift Youth Foundation throughout high school and was active in the Jewish community. In my free time I love to draw, paint, and listen to music. I’m a part of the esteemed Bagel Bois, a rap collaborative of Jewish teenagers that performs at youth group events. I’m so excited for this summer!
Jake Siet- Bonim Unit Head
Hello, Camp Stein! My name is Jake Siet and I am back again for another great summer at camp. It may be my eleventh summer of Shabbat salad, but every year is just as sweet as the ones before. I am beyond thrilled to start my new role at camp as the Bonim Unit Head, the undisputed most fun unit on camp. I’m looking forward to days full of fun activities, and nights full of awesome evening programs. During the rest of the year, I’m currently in my Junior year of a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Outside of class, my top 3 interests are snowboarding, succulents, and of course, my Mini Cooper. Can’t wait for Summer 2019!
Jordyn Blonder- Big Trip Staff
Hi there! My name is Jordyn Blonder and I am SO excited to be working at Camp Stein this summer! I have spent many summers at camp as a counselor, and many summers as a Unit Head… and now I am thrilled to be spending my 7th summer at Camp Stein staffing the Big Trip to Israel! I was raised in Chandler, Arizona and graduated from ASU (go Devils!) with my Bachelor of Art in Elementary Education. During the year I spend my days with some really amazing 5-6 year olds as I am a Kindergarten Teacher in the Cave Creek Unified School District. Some of my favorite pastimes include playing with my puppy, reading, staying active, and going on adventures! They say the happiest place on earth is Disneyland. They’re wrong, it’s camp! Lucia Bonilla- Dance Specialist
Hi there! I’m Lucia, from Valencia, a city in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. This is my second year as the dance specialist and I can’t wait for the summer to start! I have just finished my degree in Biotechnology and I’m going to do a Master’s degree in Education. While I am not at camp, I love playing the piano, dancing and hanging out with my friends. The experience from last year at camp Stein was one of the best things that has happened to me in a long time so I am very excited to come back and meet everybody. I’m sure this is going to be a summer full of fun, memories and incredible friendships!
Anat Schure- Inclusion Coordinator
Shalom! My name is Anat and I am Camp Stein’s Inclusion Coordinator for the month of July. I was born in Haifa, Israel but moved to Arizona when I was 6 months old. I am a licensed professional counselor with the State of Arizona and have over 15 years of experience working with young children, teenagers and adults. When I’m not at camp, you’ll find me schlepping my two children, Ayden (14 years old) and Arik (9 years old) to school, sports, clubs, etc. My husband, Adam, and I will be celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary in September. We live in Phoenix with our two children, our dog, Fiona and our cat, Cecilia. I enjoy volunteering within the Jewish community as well as within the public schools. I love the outdoors and have taken an interest in yoga this past year. Camp Stein is such a wonderful place and I’m super excited for this summer. It’s such a joy to see the kids having fun and creating new friendships while strengthening their ties to the Jewish culture and religion. They become more independent and gain a sense of respect of self and others while still being a kid! Camp Stein is an amazing experience and I’m thrilled to be part of the team who will make it the best summer yet!
Harry Burgess- General Counselor Hi, my name is Harry Burgess and I live in Newcastle, Australia. In my free time I spend it with family and friends, my dogs and going to the beach. This will be my 2nd year at camp stein and I’m so excited for all the activities and I can’t wait to see all the staff and campers I met last year and meet all the new faces this year.
Ran Horvitz- General Counselor Hi guys!
I’m Ran Horowitz and I will be your counselor this summer. I have just finished my service in the IDF as a sergeant in the NAHAL brigade. In my free time I like to play basketball, play guitar, listen to music and I love to hang out with my friends wondering the streets of Tel Aviv. I’m so excited about this coming summer at Camp Stein. As an israeli, it is a super special experience to be part of an American summer camp abroad. I love that Camp Stein is an authentic summer camp with a small group of campers. This is a great way to build an environment where every one of the campers can shine.A little fact about myself; I was in the Israeli Scouts for the whole of my childhood. The camp atmosphere is very similar to the scouts, and the full time activity with the kids will be familiar and enjoyable. This summer is a meaningful start to my life as a new adult who just finish serving his country. I know that this experience at Camp Stein will be the best way to celebrate this new chapter in my life. I hope this helped you get to know me better.

Deb Brown- Rishonim Unit Head
My name is Deb Brown and I am so excited to be the Rishonim Unit Head! This summer will be my third time on staff and 11th summer over all. I am graduating this May from the University of Arizona with a degree in Psychology. I am so excited to be coming back to camp this summer!
Micah Wilcox-General Counselor
I’m a rising freshman at the University of Chicago from Ventura, California. When I’m not at camp I spend my time reading, hanging out with friends, and watching movies. I love camp because it’s a place where I can be myself and get in touch with my Jewish identity. I’ve had so many great summers as part of the Camp Stein community, and I can’t wait to come back this summer.
Nathan Rix-General Counselor
I’m just finishing my first year at the University of Arizona studying Urban and Regional Development as well as Economics with a minor in Judaic Studies. I’m born and raised in Tucson, I went to University High School. When I’m not at camp I love to go hiking, hang out with friends, and explore new places. I work as a teacher for my congregation’s religious school and when I was in high school I was active in NFTY and my Jewish community. I’ve been going to camp since I was nine years old and there’s no place I would rather spend my summers. I’m really excited about my second summer on staff and I know it will be amazing.
Gabi Silver- Teva Tech Specialist
Hey All! I’m Gabi from CT, I am and I really looking forward to working at camp this summer. While I am new to the Stein family, this will be my 12th summer at Jewish Camp. The last two summers I was on staff at URJ SciTech on the Programming and Logistics Team. I am currently a sophomore at Johnson and Wales, studying Event Management and minoring in EcoTourism. On Campus I am involved with AEPi, in addition to Live Events Association. Next term, I plan to intern with the RI Jewish Federation. In my free time, I play baseball, frisbee and tennis and also love photography and traveling. See you in Prescott!

Hi! My name is Zach “Schwally” Schawelson and I am SO excited to come back to camp this summer for my 9th year! I am especially excited to be one of your music specialists, since I learned guitar many years ago starting at camp, it’ll be like coming full circle!! I’m from Scottsdale, AZ but will be attending University of Arizona this fall! Bear down! Hannah Miller- Kadimah Unit Head
Hello! My name is Hannah Miller (RED lol) and I am SO excited to be your Kadimah Unit Head at Camp Stein this summer! This will be my third summer working at camp, and my first summer on the Administrative Team! Throughout the year I attend Arizona State University (go Devils!) where I am working towards my BA in Communications. When I’m not in class or working at Temple Solel you can find me at Dutch Bros drinking my go-to Ray of Sunshine Black Tea, watching sports, traveling, or being super artsy. See you at camp!
Zack Allen- General Counselor
Hi, I am Zack and I’m from Phoenix. I am going to be a Freshman at the University of Arizona next year. This will be my 11th summer with camp. I enjoy snowboarding, hanging out with friends and traveling. My favorite color is green, I have never broken a bone before, and I always lose at monopoly.

I live in Israel and this will be my 2nd summer at camp stein.
I am so excited coming back to camp to meet new amazing people and feel the special environment of camp!
In the past year I traveled in the latin america and in Israel I worked as a barista near my hometown.

My name is Eli Nelson. I’m from Prescott AZ and this will be my 10th summer at camp. I’m always super excited to be around the people I’ve grown up with and even more excited to help kids expand their horizons and grow along with them. Camp is the “happy place” of the world and I’m absolutely stoked to go back.
